The only Shakthi shrine in Kanchipuram is the temple where Adi Sankaracharya established the Sri Chakra

Kanchi Kamakshi temple is at the heart of Kanchipuram. Goddess Kamakshi is seen as the ultimate form of Goddess Lalitha Maha Tripurasundari. The temple is surrounded in all directions by several temples of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. Being the only Shakthi shrine in Kanchipuram is a key highlight of this temple.

People believe that the Kanchi Kamakshi temple has existed since time immemorial. Adi Shankaracharya established the Sri Chakra in this temple. Archeologsts place the temple in the Pallava dynasty period.

The Goddess Kamakshi is sitting in a Padmasana posture in the temple. The Padmasana posture resembles a lotus. In the Yogic practice this resembles the form of meditation. The Goddess holds a Sugarcane bow on her left upper arm and Lotus, Parrot in her right upper arm. The Goddess also has divine chakras called Pasa and Angusa in her arms.

It is believed that after the Devi took birth to kill the Asur Bhandasur, she took the Kanya Swarup and sat in this temple. The idol is supposed to be Swayambhu. She is believed to be in the temple in three Swarupas – Sthula, Sukshama, and Shunya.

Kamakshi comes from the conjunction of three words – Ka, Ma & Aksh. Ka means Saraswati, Ma means Lakshmi and Aksh means eyes. She is whose eyes are Lakshmi & Saraswati.

Kamakshi Temple at Kanchi is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas in the country. This is where the Nabhi or the Navel of the Goddess Sati had fallen when Shiva was taking around her body. It is also believed to be the Nabhisthan or the center of the eastern hemisphere.
