The Amman for whom Anna abhishekam is performed

Mundaka kanni Amman holds the power of the trinity - Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma. The Moolavar in the Mundaka Kanni Amman is a suyambu in the shape of a lotus bud seated in front of a banyan tree. this Banyan tree is the sthala viruksham.

The name of the temple is derived from this shape as "Mundakam" means lotus. There used to be a Lotus pond earlier, where the temple is now situated. The Historical name of this Goddess is also Mayilapuri.

Despite an elaborate construction of temple premises has been done, the sanctum sanctorium is still a hut thatchet, to this day. This is because the devotees were not given the nod from the Goddess for reconstructing this part.

While there are several special poojas done in this temple, the Chitra pournami paal kudam procession and Mahishasura Mardhini procession on the last day of Navarathri festival are prominent. Usually, Anna abhishekam is performed only for Lord Shiva; but in this temple, it is performed for the Goddess.

The temple also houses a naga puthu (serpent cove) and sapta kannigai. The temple is located in Mylapore, Chennai.
